Notes for CHARLES HENRY WILSON:

Charles Wilson owned a general stone in Calhoun for many years. He allowed too much credit to his customers and finally had to give up his business. Resigning his position as postmaster, which he held for 15 years, he, his family and some friends moved to Dutton, Montana. This was in 1910. They made the trip in a railroad box car. Even their livestock was taken along.

Charles and his family lived in a one room shack with a lean-to, only a short distance from Dutton. It was on government land that would be his if they stayed on it four years. One day in 1914, Charles got down in the street at Dutton with severe stomach pains. Passersby thought he was drunk, were mean to him and would not help. Finally he was taken to a doctor and stood up in the car all the way, because he hurt so while seated and riding over bumpy roads. His operation was for a strangulated hernia and much of his intestines were removed. After the four years were up, Charles and his wife returned to Calhoun. This was only about one month before he died of cancer. He gave a bottle of wheat seed, which he had raised in Montana, to one of his grandsons. His wife died during the flu epidemic of 1918. Other relatives were stricken also and only H. A. Nicholas, a son-in-law, walked behind the hearse to the cemetery. Ida, a daughter in Washington, Indiana, had not received word of her mother's death.

His wife knew nothing about it until they got home. After Jesse left, George thought they needed another youngster around the house. Lillian was very intelligent, one of her classmates wrote in a letter to one of my relatives. This letter went on to read, Lillian would get her lessons well while other students paid little attention at school.
